In the fall of 1996, Southern K Ranch was started with the commitment to enhancing the self-esteem and self-confidence in our inner city and therapeutic youth. The ranch gave these youth the opportunity to experience nature through horsemanship on a beautiful 26-acre ranch minutes from downtown Atlanta in South Fulton County. Southern K Ranch has entertained crowds for the past 9 years with their annual multi-cultural Mother’s Day weekend rodeo.
In 1998, as a young African-American cowboy in Georgia, breaking into the predominately white sport of rodeo brought many challenges. After traveling the country for 12 years and participating in numerous rodeo circuits, I was inspired to launch a professional touring rodeo organization that would promote the diversity and cultural achievements of modern day cowboys and cowgirls throughout the Southeast. These world-class athletes come from a wide range of races and backgrounds: African-American, Hispanic, Indian and Caucasian. In essence, I would be taking what I had developed in Georgia to other communities across the region, hence marking the beginning of the Down N Dirty Rodeo Tour.
Along with showcasing the excellence of these “rugged individualists”, we are also committed to educating men and their families on prostate health and cancer awareness. Featured at each of our rodeos will be the Down N Dirty Rodeo Health Fair that will: shed light on the ease of testing for prostate cancer, offer free PSA tests, promote healthy lifestyle changes that can help reduce the risk of cancer and connect attendees with healthcare providers leading the fight against prostate cancer. A portion of the proceeds from the rodeo tour will go toward prostate cancer research for a cure.
Down N Dirty is an educational, cultural, exciting and entertaining experience for all who attend. Join us in this celebration of diversity and in taking a stand in the fight against prostate cancer.
